By Azura, by Azura, by Azura! The Grand Champion is finally here, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster is real! On April 22nd, 2025, Bethesda Game Studios shadow-dropped one of the biggest surprises this year so far in gaming. The full remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. There were suspected leaks and screenshots provided the week prior by different sources, but Bethesda decided to do a full release this past Tuesday. Now, keep in mind I have been an Elder Scrolls fan for most of my life, so naturally I was extremely excited to grab this. Even more so that we didn't have to wait for it like a lot of companies often do, (big flashy trailers with only "Coming Soon" at the end).
This came as quite a shock, but many gamers jumped at the chance to re-experience this classic with a fresh coat of paint. I for one was one of those gamers, as I sunk hundreds of hours into the original release back in 2006 on the Xbox 360 and PC. This version of the game also includes all previous DLC and Expansions, such as The Shivering Isles, and Knights of the Nine. They had to include the adoring fan as well, who excitedly follows you around and gives you praise (as he should) when you enter the Arena. They even added the famous "Horse Armor" as paid DLC with this remaster.
I had the chance to play roughly 4 hours of the game, and it's just like I remembered it when I was younger. The voice acting, the gameplay and combat, and yes, even the jank that is so often seen in Bethesda Game Studios releases. They (Bethesda) partnered with the well-known Virtuos Studios, who have worked on several other big name titles. These titles include Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Sea of Thieves, and many more.
If you're curious about The Elder Scrolls series even slightly, or if you're a die-hard Bethesda Game Studios fan for life, this Remaster is sure to give you your money's worth. They have re-recorded lines of dialogue, updated the UI and Menu system for a more user-friendly experience, and every asset has been re-worked to provide that "fresh" feeling. I can also say as someone who played the original, this feels like a brand new game. Yes there are still little bugs and glitches here and there, but as someone who has played a good majority of the Bethesda Game Studios games, I can confirm that this is basically part of the experience.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster is available now for PC, Playstation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Game Pass. Enjoy your new, or return, journey to Cyrodil, and may the Nine Divines guide your path.
