Sony's State of Play has been a staple in the gaming community for the past few years now. This format was introduced in March 2019, and has been going strong ever since. They typically use these digital presentations to highlight new titles in addition to updates for existing PlayStation titles, PSVR titles, and even some Playstation titles coming to PC via the Steam Store. On June 4th, 2025, Sony presented a another edition of this event with a bevvy of new titles, updates to existing titles, and some surprises for every kind of gamer out there. Let's get into it!
Lumines: Arise
Kicking off the presentation, they showed off a game called Lumines: Arise from the development team at Enhance Games. This studio also developed Tetris Effect several years back, and the influence absolutely shines through. Lumines is a classic musical puzzle game first introduced on the PS2 back in 2004. This is a puzzle/music based game where you clear lines of blocks and shapes to get the highest score while jamming out to some pulse-pounding tracks. Now I've never played Lumines, but as a huge Tetris fan, I will likely be checking this one out. Lumines: Arise will be releasing on the PS5 and PSVR2 this fall.
Pragmata
Next up, they showed off a previously announced game, Pragmata by Capcom. It's been almost exactly 5 years since this game was originally announced, and now we finally have a release window of 2026. This game features two characters - an astronaut and a child who are introduced and forced to quickly become acquainted as they are thrust into adventure side by side. The premise details are still blurry, but if you enjoy sci-fi, this game may be right up your alley. Pragmata will release on the PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S in 2026.
Romeo is a Dead Man
This next game is a brand-new announcement, and comes from the team at Grasshopper Manufacture. Romeo is a Dead Man looks to be a fever-dream induced action adventure game, and is sure to keep you on your toes. If Grasshopper Manufacture seems familiar to you, it's likely because it is the same team behind No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned, and Lollipop Chainsaw. Romeo is a Dead Man is coming to the PS5, PC, and Xbox One Series X/S and is slated to release some time in 2026.
Silent Hill f
And now one for the horror genre fans, next up they showed off more of Silent Hill f from Konami. This entry in the long-standing Silent Hill series looks absolutely terrifying, and appears to actually take place in Japan, which is a first for Silent Hill. Walls crumble, enemies crawl towards you (not unlike Samara from The Ring), and they even have scarecrow enemies that look like school students. This entry is unsettling, creepy, and is sure to frighten many when it releases for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S on September 25th, 2025.
Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement
This next series is sure to impress those Metroidvania fans, (myself included!), it's Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement by Artplay and 505 games. The original Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night released several years ago with Koji Igarashi, the godfather of the entire Castlevania series as the lead producer. He left Konami, and has since had his own studio, Artplay, which released the original Bloodstained in 2019. This series appears to be a spiritual successor to the fantastic Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and employs some familiar tactics. Back-tracking, crazy fast combat, magical spells, and much more- Bloodstained: The Scarlet Entanglement releases on the PS5 in a release window of 2026.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger
"Digimon, digital monsters, Digimon are the CHAMPIONS!" This next title comes to us from Bandai Namco, and it's Digimon Story: Time Stranger. The Digimon series has had quite a few entries over the years, but this one looks particularly intense. The production value has increased, and from the trailer alone, it feels like you're playing scenes straight out of the anime series. The formula is simple - collect cool monsters, alter their appearance and "Digivolve" them to increase their firepower. I have yet to dabble in the video games from this series, but this announcement has me intrigued. Digimon Story: Time Stranger releases on the PS5, PC, and Xbox One Series X/S on October 3rd, 2025.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles
State of Play's next announcement came as a true shock, as Square Enix announced a full remaster for the original Final Fantasy Tactics. This new entry is called Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. This series has been stuck on older hardware for some time now, and it's very exciting to see Square Enix bring back this beloved series. Final Fantasy Tactics was originally released on the PS1 back 1997. Yeah, it's been that long. Nearly 28 years later, your journey within Ivalice takes place, and with plenty of tactical action. This announcement is particularly interesting due to the timing, as even original script scenario writer and editor Yasumi Matsuno points out in a statement - this game has heavy themes of resistance and fighting against division and inequality. They also announced that this entry has the remastered visuals, as well as the option to play the original game (with the War of the Lions translation) in all its glory. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles releases for the PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One Series X/S on September 30th, 2025.
Baby Steps
Everything starts with one step. One foot in front of the other. In this next game, Baby Steps from Devolver Digital, that's the game. You are controlling a character who is learning to navigate the world with just their steps, and you have a huge emphasis on physics-based gameplay. Devolver Digital has been known to produce games with very silly premises, and this one looks to be no exception. Baby Steps releases for the PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S on September 8th, 2025.
Hirogami
Next up is a game inspired by the Japanese art of Origami. In Hirogami by Kakehashi Games, you play as a character who is a master of "The Folding", where they can turn into various creatures to traverse the environment. An action-adventure game at its core, you'll explore vast areas, encounter fearsome beasts, and find secrets galore. It also boasts a traditional Japanese soundtrack to soothe you as you traverse the environment. Hirogami releases for the PS5 on September 3rd, 2025.
Everybody's Golf: Hot Shots
For the sports fans, next up we have Everybody's Golf: Hot Shots by Bandai Namco. This new entry in the Hot Shots series comes as a surprise, as the last entry was Everybody's Golf VR in 2019. The series has been known for its anime-inspired character designs, and this entry seems to be no stranger to those designs. During the announcement, we were also told that Pac-Man will be a playable character, who becomes unlocked with a Pre-order of the game. So if you've ever wanted to golf as Pac-Man, you'll have your chance when Everybody's Golf: Hot Shots launches for the PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S on September 4th, 2025.
Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound
The Gaming Kitchen has been cooking up something extra special for fans in the next reveal, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound. If the name of that studio seems familiar, it's because they also made the wonderful title Blasphemous. I can't wait to check this entry out, as I am a huge fan of side-scrolling action games, and the sheer amount of style coming off this game is amazing. Ninja Gaiden as a whole has had many entries of course, but typically they are all in house at Team Ninja. This entry seems to be a love-letter to the series, and even has some of the original composers of the Ninja Gaiden series. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound launches for the PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S on July 31st, 2025.
Cairn
Do you ever just feel like climbing a mountain, but don't actually want to go outside? Well then Cairn by The Game Breakers might be just for you. A physics-based climbing simulator, this stylized game is sure to enthrall those who are wanting to "mount" a challenge. (See what I did there?) You will also control the legs and arms individually with a heavy focus on physics based gameplay. Also announced during the trailer was the fact that a demo for Cairn is out now in the PlayStation Store. Cairn releases on the PS5 on November 5th, 2025.
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection
"Fatality!" In a move that likely had many a Mortal Kombat fan jumping out of their seats - it was revealed that NetherRealm Studios, in conjunction with Digital Eclipse, are releasing the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection. So many fans, including myself, have been asking for a collection like this for years. The original Mortal Kombat games have been locked on older consoles for some time now, so this was a wonderful surprise. I can't wait to jump back into this historic series, I even have a Mortal Kombat tattoo! This collection contains Mortal Kombat 1, Mortal Kombat 2, Mortal Kombat 3: Ultimate, Mortal Kombat 4, and more console, arcade, and even GameBoy titles. This entry also has loads of extra behind-the-scenes content, concept art, collectibles and more! The Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection launches for the PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 1&2, and Xbox Series X/S later this year.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
Snake? Snake?? SNAAAAAAKEEEEE!!? That's right, the king of "Tactical Espionage Action" returns! Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater by Konami. A well-known director by the name of Hideo Kojima created this incredible series back in the 90s, but this time we are getting a full-blown remake of MGS 3: Snake Eater. This entry has it all - camouflage, weapons galore, and even the infamous Ape Escape tie-in minigame. For those who haven't experienced the original, this may be a perfect time to jump into this legendary series. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater releases on the PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S on August 28th, 2025.
Nioh 3
A resurrection has come to a series we all thought was done and gone! Nioh 3 has officially been announced by Team Ninja, and all the yokai bashing action returns. This series made a name for itself by being inspired by the Dark Souls series, but also firmly establishing its own identity through the way of weapon stances, and a more linear world delineated by "Stages" rather than one large interconnected map. This new entry in the series also allows you to swap fighting styles completely, between "Samurai" and "Ninja". One style is more rigid but powerful, and the other is flashy and fast. If you're curious, a demo for Nioh 3 was also released on PS5 the same day as the announcement. Nioh 3 will release on the PS5, and on PC in early 2026.
Astro Bot: The Challenge Levels DLC
"I am Astro Bot!", the catchy song from the Astro Bot games appeared next, along with the Director at Team Asobi, letting us know that a slew of new challenge levels will be launching later this month. Astro Bot is one of the finest platforming games I've ever played, and I can't wait to dive back in with this new content. They also announced that one of the guest characters for the upcoming free DLC will be the titular character from The Ghost of Yotei, which also release on PlayStation 5 this year.
Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow
Want the thrill of theft without the real world consequences? We have a game for you! A new entry in the Thief series, in the way of the PSVR 2. Thief VR: Legacy of Shadows was announced during the State of Play, and shows off how you can live your stealthy fantasy in VR. You can sneak about, take down enemies, steal items, and explore to your hearts content when Thief VR: Legacy of Shadows launches for the PSVR 2 in 2025.
Tides of Tomorrow
If you are into rogue-likes, strange underwater worlds, and a compelling story, then Tides of Tomorrow by publisher Deep Silver may be perfect for you. Digixart, the team behind this game also made Road 96, a game rooted in storytelling and exploration. Tides of Tomorrow tells an interconnected story where you can see other players actions within the game world. You can also directly interact with them, through Cross-platform multiplayer. If you'd like to go solo, that's absolutely an option as well! Tides of Tomorrow releases for the PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X and S on February 26th, 2026.
Sea of Remnants
Keeping up with the water theme, pirate games have been around for years, the likes of AC IV: Black Flag, Sea of Thieves, and Skull and Bones among them. Now there's a new addition the the gaming high seas, as Sea of Remnants was announced during the State of Play. This game comes from developer Joker Studio, and looks to be an absolute riot. The character designs in particular appear to be almost puppet-like? This games design boasts vibrant colors and settings, as you explore the world of Orbtopia while trying to regain lost memories. It is a single-player RPG that has turn-based combat which is particularly interesting for a pirate game. The developers have also stated that there are over 300+ companion characters to interact with. Sea of Remnants searches for its buried treasure on PS5, PC and mobile in 2026.
Sword of the Sea
Video games have always been an art form, despite what some naysayers believe. This is especially apparent with this next announcement. Sword of the Sea, also keeping up with the water theme, was announced by Giant Squid. This is a small but seasoned team who has also worked on incredible games such as Abzu and The Pathless. Those who may recognize the art style may also look back on Journey, which has several developers who moved on to form Giant Squid. Sword of the Sea has a beautiful, almost ethereal at times environment. Heavy on the exploration (and awe of environments), you are literally "surfing on a sword" throughout this sprawling area. You can also perform tricks, flips and spins on your sword while surfing about. Explore as much as you'd like when Sword of the Sea launches on PS5 and PC on August 19th, 2025.
007: First Light
The next game had been rumored for quite a while, but now we have an official announcement. Bond, James Bond. That's right, a new entry in the famous 007 series has been announced. 007: First Light has a shiny new trailer from IO Interactive Games. Previously codenamed "Project 007", we have our first gameplay and cinematics from this new entry. The premise is that you are playing as a young James Bond as he first joins the agency that made him into the master spy of yore. Several other 007 characters have been confirmed to join the cast as well. Something particularly interesting in this trailer is that the game appears highly stylized, with an almost comic-book like feel to it. 007: First Light launches for the PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and the Xbox Series X/S and is slated for a 2026 release window.
Ghost of Yotei
Next we got a very exciting but very brief teaser of The Ghost of Yotei by Playstation Studios. Ghost of Yotei had been previously announced, but not many details have been shared as of yet. Sony has announced that an additional State of Play has been scheduled for sometime this July. Ghost of Yotei is the follow-up to the excellent Ghost of Tsushima, this time with the main character being played by the very talented Erika Ishii. Ghost of Yotei launches for the PS5 on October 2nd, 2025.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls
Finally, we have come to our last announcement. This last game comes from the team behind Guilty Gear, Dragonball Fighter Z, and BlazBlue. That's right, Arc System Works has a brand new entry into the fighting arena, with Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. This announcement came as quite a bit of a shock, as only Capcom previously had the rights to handle Marvel's superheroes. The game premise is a 4v4 2-D fighter with flashy combos, tag team attacks, and beautiful environments. So far, several characters were shown off. You have the staples like Captain America, Spider-Man, and Iron Man, but this time we're also getting some lesser known characters in the way of Ms. Marvel, and Peter Quill (otherwise known as Star-Lord). I am a huge fighting game fan personally, and have enjoyed every Arc System Works game I've played. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls will be released for the PS5 and PC in 2026.
That's a wrap y'all! These are all the games either announced, updated, or release dates confirmed for the Sony State of Play, and as a fellow gamer, I for one am quite excited for many of these entries. For all things gaming, nerdy, and pop-culture, make sure you head to "Nerd to Know"!
